Barbara Gabogrecan is known as the Micro and Home Based Business Guru. She has been invited to sit on a number of Government committees to provide a ‘voice’ for the sector since she brought the importance of this sized business in the economy, to the attention of the Government and the small business community in 1995. As well as ‘championing’ the cause for the sector, she ensured that the dynamic and innovative Micro/HBB’s were promoted through the Australian Micro Business Awards that she instigated and ran for 5 years. Telstra Small Business Awards then made one of their categories open to the Micro sector, with many businesses being winners of both Awards! Barbara has also judged the Victorian Government Training Awards and the International Marketing and Communication Awards, for a number of years. But as well as being a judge, Barbara is also a winner, having won seven of the Australian Gift of the Year Awards! Barbara has also written a book titled ‘How to Run a Business from your Kitchen Table” (in its second edition) and provided the content for the government’s website, http://www.homebusinessmanual.com.au/ The Victorian Government and Telematics Trust supported Barbara in a joint venture to develop Biz-in-a-Box, which was a programme designed to assist youth to develop their own Micro/HBB. It is now available to all ‘start up’ businesses. Barbara has spent the last two years developing an accreditation programme, ‘Micro Biz Navigator’, which will allow Micro/HBB to become ‘star rated’ and will give them a competitive edge, leading to increased sales and business success. She is also President of the only Australian Chapter of MCEI (Marketing Communications Executives International). She went to Tokyo and won a bid to have Melbourne Australia host the World Congress on Marketing and Communication (MCEI), which she facilitated in June 2001 with over 100 delegates attending from overseas. Having developed her own successful Art business from the ‘kitchen table’; winning awards; and successfully participating in Trade Fairs and Business Expos – Barbara now spends her time sharing her success secrets with other aspiring business operators and organising opportunities for them to participate in. Barbara has been nominated as the Networking World networker of the month because she enbodies the philosophy "What can I do for you?" constantly going out of her way to help other people that she networks with. Here is what Barbara has to say about the art of networking. "I am a great believer in networking and creating joint ventures (JV) and alliances with others, so that everyone is a winner. Both parties in a JV must benefit, as must their members/contacts/clients. I always approach a JV with the thought in mind ‘what can I do for them?’ – then I write down as many things that I can offer them that I think appropriate. I then make a list of what I think they could do for me. Invariably my list of what I can do for them is a lot longer than what I would like them to do for me. Some of the opportunities you think of may be based on a barter system – a very old method of trading and one that still holds a lot of promise, when done correctly. Recently I have created JV’s with the following product and services: I cannot go into details of what I was able to provide and receive (due to privacy) but have listed here some of the key features – given and received. • Provided an overseas speaking engagement • Had MCEI promoted to an external data base of 4,000 • Had graphic design work provided • Online auction as a fundraiser for MCEI was received • Received advertising space in a publication going out to 10,000 per month • Another organisation had reciprocal membership with MCEI and many attended MCEI Connect Events • Received an upgrade of software for the data base used by MCEI • Received assistance with the running of the Online Forum • Received Video recording for all MCEI Connect Events And the list goes on……just remember – keep true to the philosophy of “What Can I Do For You?” and the JV strategy will work very, very well."
